8th Grade Job Shadowing Program

In the spring of each year, eighth grade students from Piqua Junior High and Piqua Catholic schools participate in the Piqua Chamber of Commerce annual Job Shadowing Program.

The purpose of this project is to:

  • Provide firsthand information about jobs/careers in which students are interested.
  • Provide information which will help students select high school courses of study by increasing awareness of what educational requirements are needed for various professions.
  • Motivate students
  • Encourage communication and cooperation between educators, business people and parents.

In order to qualify, each student is required to submit an essay about why they chose a particular career to shadow. The students who are selected are then matched with business people in the Piqua area.

The eighth graders will shadow individuals from a broad assortment of careers.  Some of these include judges, police officers, firefighters, veterinarians, beauticians, office managers, computer technicians, teacher and accountants. During a follow-up session each student is given the opportunity to share their experience with the other students.  An evaluation of the program is each year, and this information is utilized to improve the program the following year.
