Ohio Business Week

The Ohio Business Week Foundation (OBW), a non-profit organization that provides free enterprise education for high school students who are freshman, sophomore, or juniors. “Ohio Business Week is tailored to students who are interested in learning about entrepreneurship from successful business professionals.” Said Ohio Business Week Foundation Director Nancy Whetstone. “OBW participants emerge with knowledge and skills that make them more viable in the job market and better prepared for higher education.”

Students accepted to the program are awarded a scholarship from a local business or service organization. The Piqua Area Chamber of Commerce has pledged a significant amount of support for OBW.

“I’m extremely pleased with the efforts made by The Piqua Area Chamber of Commerce to support the Ohio Business Week program, said Whetstone. “The organization truly cares about the youth of Ohio.”

Founded in 1988, the program pairs executives from Ohio companies with students interested in learning more about business and the American free enterprise system. During the weeklong program, “student companies” generate ideas for new business ventures; complete a computer-based business simulation model; elect company officers; and participate in team building activities. Each student company then researches and writes business, financial and marketing plans; develops a radio spot and a magazine ad/web page; and competes for awards in each category. Educational scholarships for excellence in leadership and community service are awarded each week.

Ohio Business Week is held at Ohio Dominican College in Columbus, and at Youngstown State University. Scholarship information and student applications can be obtained from the Piqua Chamber of Commerce or from the student’s high school guidance counselor beginning in January.
